At 7 a.m., Deborah and her girlfriends gather at a coffee shop and strategize.   PLAN A ROUTE. Plan an efficient route based on yard-sale ads in the classifieds. Deborah and her friends check 10 to 15 sales by 11 a.m. every Saturday in the summer.   Learn to share in advance. If you and a friend both see an item each of you simply must have, come up with a system that lets you take turns.   LOCATION. Shop neighborhood by neighborhood.

QUALITY. To check the quality of an item you want to buy, learn about labels and trademarks and check them. Deborah studies the stamps on the back of delftware to see if each piece is original. For linens, check labels for material content, thread counts and washing instructions.   TRANSPORTATION. Leave the tiny sports car in the garage and take the SUV. It contains lots of cargo room for purchases, including furniture.

HOW TO PAY. Bring cash - plenty of small bills and change.   Bargain. If you think a price is too high, ask sellers if they will take less. For added argument, tell them a sale to you means they won't have to lug the item back into their garage.
